Tim Arnold is a Racing Driver and ARDS (Association of Racing Driver's Schools) Grade S Licensed MSA (Motor Sports Association) Approved Instructor specialising in track day instruction, racing driver coach and performance driving instructor, including advanced car control, skid control and drifting.
Tim offers private one-to-one track driving tuition for all levels of experience from complete novices wanting to learn the basics for track days or to get through their ARDS Test and go racing, to experienced track day enthusiasts and racing drivers who want to improve their technique and pace.
Tim began racing in the late 70's in Formula Ford 1600, initially completeing two courses at the Jim Russell International Racing Driver's School at Silverstone and Snetterton. He won the very first ever Formula Ford race he took part in, at Silverstone in a Merlyn Mk21, in a Jim Russell Racing Driver's Club race meeting.
Following his first race Tim competed in further JRRDC races in 1978, worked with a racing team in 1979 because he had no budget to race with, and was paid with free testing, allowing him to build up track miles at various circuits in a Formula Ford.
During the latter part of 1979 and through 1980 Tim built a Royale RP24 from second-hand parts and towards
the end of 1980 put in more testing miles in his own car. He raced the Royale in many Formula Ford races around the UK over the next couple of years, mainly picking and choosing races that he could afford on his virtually non-existent budget. During 1981 he began selling Formula Ford 1600 cars for Reynard as an agent and briefly owned a new Reynard FF82, which he raced at the Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting in 1982. Since the mid-80's Tim has raced occasionally in Formula Ford, Formula Ford 2000, Formula Renault, Britcar, Britsports, Radicals and Fun Cup.
In 2011 Tim is continuing to coach a client who he has nurtured from a complete novice in early 2010 to leading the Novice Class in the HSCC Historic Formula Ford Championship. As a result Tim is planning to compete in some HSCC Formula Ford races before the end of the 2011 season after a handful of laps at various circuits in his client's 1971 Elden have proved him to be still capable of competitive times. The video at the top left of this article shows Tim driving the Elden at Snetterton's new 300 circuit in June '11. This was just a 4 lap shakedown after some new parts had been fitted and a set up done. The track was slightly damp with light drizzle and there was a serious brake broblem requiring a double-pump to get a pedal. The quickest of the 4 laps would have qualified Tim 12th on the grid of 28 that qualified in the dry two days later!
