Career History - Racing

My racing career began in 1977 and 1978 with two full courses at the Jim Russell International Racing Driver's Schools at Silverstone and Snetterton, although I had previously driven a Formula Ford 1600 in a trial lesson with JRIRDS at Mallory Park in 1972 aged just 15.

Having completed the two JRIRDS courses and a in addition, their Skid Control Course at Snetterton; I began racing in the Jim Russell Racing Driver's Club's 'closed' races in 1978 (these were only open to competitors who had done the Jim Russell courses), winning my first ever race which was a novice race made up half of first timer's and half of second timer's. I then went on to compete in half a dozen or so JRRDC 'closed' races for more experienced drivers, finishing in the top three in all but one of the races I entered.

After JIm Russell I competed in numerous Formula Ford 1600 races, initially in hired cars and subsequently in my own car. I naively threw myself in at the deep end, attempting to compete at national level with neither the experience, the equipment nor the budget. Not being from a wealthy background, budget was always tight and the only way I could afford my own car was to buy an old one, and in 1980 I purchased a repaired Royale RP24 chasiss from a friend who ran a second hand racing car business - David Winstanley of Lodge Corner Agencies in Crewe. Through 1980 I carried on working in my engineering job while saving for, buying and renovating parts, and gradually rebuilding the 1978 car. At the same time, through '79 and '80 I helped another friend of mine, Robert Foden (of the Foden Trucks family) to run his 'RF Racing' race hire concern for which I was paid in track time; this helped me to gain a lot of experience both in race car preparation and in driving on most of the UK's circuits. My car was completed at the end of 1980 and I raced in it from 1981 to 1983, managing regular top six finishes despite having to 'cherry pick' the races I could afford to do. Unfortunately he budget I had was never sufficient for me to compete for a full champioship season.

Tim Arnold, Madgwick Motorsport Reynard SF86, Brands Hatch 1986

Following a financially enforced break I decided to try to rekindle my career in 1985 by attempting to move up into Formula Ford 2000. I managed to find a little bit of sponsorship which I decided would be put to better use doing some testing in the wings and slicks cars before going racing. My first drive was in a new car called a Talon, in a test I shared with David Leslie at Silverstone; following that I did a series of tests with Madgwick Motorsport, who were one of the leading FF2000 and F3 teams at the time.

Following my tests in the team's Reynard SF85 and one race, Robert Synge, the team's CEO, invited me to lunch where he offered me the chance of a lifetime; they had team sponsors in Warmastyle and BP and had signed up their main driver, Andy Wallace, but they needed a top up to complete the budget and offered me the seat in their second F3 car for the following season for only £40,000, which was incredible because even back then an F3 drive with a leading team was around £150,000+! Sadly though I was unable to raise even that much and I missed my big chance. Andy Wallace went on to win the Championship and subsequently became a works driver for Jaguar in world sports car racing, winning the drivers title and winning the Le Mans 24 Hour Race.

Tim Arnold, Van Dieman RF85, Champion of Oulton race 1996

Since then I continued to race periodically, in the odd Formula Ford race through the late 80's and in Formula Ford and Formula Renault occasionally from the early to mid 90's. While also in 1994 I began instructing more regularly.

I had a break from driving from 1998 and became involved in the running of a GT racing team and finding sponsorship. In 2000 I had a great success with the sponsorship finding, securing £250,000 for the British GT racing team, Brookspeed.

In 2003 Brookspeed ventured into the track day arena, providing hire cars for track days, which led me back into instructing and subsequently back into racing. My racing has now taken a different direction and I compete occasionally in endurance races such as Britcar, Britsports and Radical races.

Tim Arnold, Radical SR3, Enduro Race, Donington 2007

I have recently raced in a Caterham R400, a BMW M3 Super Touring car and my last race was in a Radical SR3 at Donington in 2007. I haven't raced so far in 2008 but I'm currently working on plans for 2009.
